10 Mac Apps for Web Design and Development
Mac Apps

Here at Surge Creative we have an obsession with apps (well maybe I do!) In this post I will be giving a brief overview of the apps & tools we use on a daily basis.

Photoshop CS6

Photoshop CS6How could I forget to mention this beast? Photoshop may have become bloated over the years but that doesn’t stop it from being a specialist tool with the help of a couple of extras.

Illustrator CS6

Illustrator CS6Whether we need to edit a logo, create an icon, open stock vectors, Illustrator is the go-to tool.

Layer Cake

Layer CakeThis handy little app by MacRabbit will scan your PSD for Layers named something.png (or jpg/gif) and automatically creates a separate file for every one! Really handy when you open a PSD and set Layer Cake to repeat every time the PSD changes.

CSS Hat

CSS HatThis is an excellent extension for Photoshop which allows you to transform Photoshop Layers into CSS3 in seconds! Although it is a massive time saver, it doesn’t completely automate the process by handing you a completed website tied with a ribbon. It speeds up the time it takes trying to replicate your precious Photoshop Layer Styles into CSS.

Sublime Text 2

Sublime Text 2Sublime is the king of all Text Editors, from its blazing fast file switching (and super speed in general) to its amazing customisation, Sublime Text is one of the best editors we have used (and we have used A LOT).

CodeKit

CodeKitCodeKit is a swish army knife for web developers. It enables you to compress images, minify javascript & compile LESS, SASS (our preferred), and many more. It will even auto reload your browser too!

Gitbox

GitboxAll development work should be under version control and git is pretty much the industry standard now. We use Gitbox mainly for its great keyboard control & simple interface.

Sequel Pro

Sequel ProConnecting to databases can be a hassle. Finding the login details for the web hosting, logging in, loading up phpMyAdmin etc. That is where Sequel Pro comes in. It is a desktop app for MySQL database management.

Transmit

TransmitThere is always a time when you need to quickly upload something or change something on the server. Panic’s Transmit is the clear winner in our book.

MAMP Pro

Mamp ProI will be writing a post about our workflow soon which will involve a few of the apps above but it all starts with this one. It turns your Mac into a local server that you can use to install WordPress, test websites etc.

All done. I hope you found this post useful. If you want me to bake you a nice cookie then please share using the buttons below.
